English Language Admission TestThe English Language Admission Test, or ELAT, is a free, online English test exclusively for BYU–Hawaii applicants only.
The BYU–Hawaii admissions and the EIL department developed the English Language Admission Test (ELAT), a series of English proficiency tests for international students, according to Maurice Mo’o, the manager of BYUH’s Admissions and a local from Laie.
Thanks to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the cost of attending BYU–Hawaii is drastically lower than other liberal arts colleges. While the tuition of other colleges averages at $35,000 a semester, a semester here at BYU–Hawaii is approximately $5,000. Full-Time Tuition
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), and ELAT (English Language Admissions Test) are the approved tests of English language proficiency.
EIL Testing. BYUH requires most international students to be tested in English prior to their arrival at the university. The test consists of three parts, including timed writing, reading, and listening portions. Students will also have a short interview with an EIL instructor.
The ELAT is a free, online English test exclusively for BYU–Hawaii applicants. BYU–Hawaii requires a minimum score in each English language skill area to pass the ELAT: a reading score of 10 or more, a listening score of 11 or more, a writing score of 3.5 or more, and a speaking score of 3 or more.
Those who have completed PathwayConnect and passed an English proficiency test will receive priority consideration. Students should apply after completion of PathwayConnect and continue to pursue certificates and degrees through BYU-Pathway Worldwide while they wait for admission decisions from BYU–Hawaii.
