Elle est dérivée des écritures originelles des langues berbères du Sud algérien et du Niger chez les Touaregs, le libyque initialement désigné sous le terme de numidique — tombée en désuétude pour les langues berbères du Nord dès l'Antiquité — probablement par le biais du tifinagh ancien du Sahara, dont il garde les caractéristiques morphosyntaxiques.
